Woodland Retreat

The Woodland area has space for up to 30 people, ideal for School group’s or corporate events. With a raised central fire pit, providing open fire cooking facility’s makes for a practical and welcoming space.

Butterfly Lodge Education Centre offers holistic one to one training and therapeutic experiences in a farm environment. All work is done at a pace suitable to the learner and the centre is open to anyone who would like to benefit from this form of therapeutic and educational activity. The site itself boasts 2 fully equipped classrooms, including a disabled toilet and kitchen facility, as well as a small animal centre, stables, goat barn with fully operational mechanical dairy as well as fields of grazing animals such as pygmy goats, sheep and cows. The farm also aims to be as environmentally friendly as possible, recycling water and using renuable energy from the farm\'s wind turbine and solar pannels. As the centre is set in the heart of the Essex countryside certain conservation activities are also available alongside a horticultural project making use of our vegetable plot and polytunnel. Students and farm helpers coming to the centre can choose to specialise in one area of agricultural expertise, for example horse care or poultry care, or they can choose to come to enjoy the experiences as a whole and engage with all animals across the board. In this manner we can create tailor made courses for individuals and small groups.

Wildlife Garden

Positioned next to the Kitchen Garden Comprising of a grassed area surrounded by a fence with Guinea Pigs Hut and Run, Picnic area with bench tables, Bug Hotel, Small Pond. There are two small standard trees and several areas planet with wild flowers.

Yurt & Decking

The English word Yurt comes from the Russian Yurta describing a circular trellis walled framed tent. The Russian word Yurta is derived from a Turkic word describing a camping ground. The roof is supported by a conical or domed frame consisting of a number of ribs radiating from a central wooden wheel to the top of the wall trellis. The yurt is traditionally covered with felt, made by beating and rolling wet sheep fleece. There are three main types of yurt:

The Kirgiz yurt with bent-wood roof poles and crown and a domed overall shape. Used by the Turkish speaking kirgiz, Kazak, Uzbek, and Turkmen people.

Sensory Garden

A sensory garden is a garden environment that is designed with the purpose of stimulating the senses. This stimulation occurs courtesy of plants and the use of materials that engage one's senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound.

Bug Hotel

Bug Hotel

The basic framework is made of wooden pallets. The more you can use recycled or reclaimed materials the better. The Bug Hotel can be as large or small as you want but not less than four pallets high for the small ones. The structure should be stable, so you might want to secure each pallet to the one below.

Building with old Pallets

Recycling for life.

If you're worried about the amount of Woodland that is being destroyed then you will agree with us that recycling Pallets is our small way of helping to preserving our Woodlands.

We are a 40 acre care farm based in Abberton just outside of Colchester in the heart of the Essex countryside. A care farm brings together the care of the land, environment and animals with care of the people. A care farm opens its doors to anyone who can benefit from being out in the countryside and enjoy taking part in the daily life of a working farm. At Wellies On, we are a community farm focusing on social inclusion and our philosophy is...

"Tell me and I'll forget; Show me and I might remember; Involve me and I'll understand."

Community Allotment Scheme

Community Allotment

Social and therapeutic horticulture is the formal name given to the process of using gardening and plants to help individuals develop.

Here at Wellies-On Community Interest Company we are starting a Community Allotment Scheme. This will involve an existing piece of land being remodelled by volunteers and students, refurbishing an existing Polly Tunnel and building new raised beds and composting bins.
